The Most Haunted Cities in America, A little Halloween Fun Info!!

The Most Haunted Cities in America

Paul Sisolak (Guest Post)Matt Trosle via Flickr
We've all heard (and been scared by) some spooky story, freaky urban legend or scary myth that happened right in the neighborhood. You might even consider yourself an authority on paranormal behavior. But how well do you really know America's ghost history?
FindTheHome and FindTheCompany teamed up to identify the most haunted city in each state. To discover the most haunted cities, we found the places with the most cemetery businesses, funeral services, and antique shops (to find the places most likely to be riddled with lingering ghosts of the past). Consider traveling to one of these ghoulish haunts this Halloween. Perhaps you can even go trick-or-treating in these cities with a year-round ghostly reputation.

#10. Asheville, NC

Population: 84,883
Haunted Index: 61.6

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.06
Antique shops per 10k people: 3.65
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 2.71

Asheville's Haunted Story: Perhaps the ultimate penalty for James Sneed and James Henry was that they'd be doomed to roam the earth as ghosts. In 1835, they were convicted of stealing a horse and hanged at the intersection of Merrimon and Broadway. Though the location has changed in Asheville over the last two centuries, the eerie sounds of horse hooves, rolling wagon, and the death knell of a gallows trap-door are heard here.

#9. Cleveland, TN

Population: 41,898
Haunted Index: 62.18

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 0.72
Antique shops per 10k people: 1.43
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 4.3

Cleveland's Haunted Story: The blood stains on the white stone arch above the Craigmiles Mausoleum paint a stark contrast, and signify the tragedy that fell the pioneer family. Four members of the Craigmiles all died young from fatal illnesses, freak infections and auto accidents -- and as each one was interred at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the blood stains got deeper and darker.

#8. Conroe, TX

Population: 59,429
Haunted Index: 62.19

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 2.02
Antique shops per 10k people: 3.03
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 1.85

Conroe's Haunted Story: Not every haunting comes from a ghost centuries old. Ever since a fatal 2008 explosion at the Huntsman Petrochemical Plant that killed two workers, many witnesses have seen and heard doors slamming, voices talking, and the transparent image of a tall, pale man. In the company's training building, which was used as a temporary hospital following the explosion, some people feel as though they're being watched -- or even followed.

#7. Greenville, SC

Population: 59,944
Haunted Index: 62.52

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.84
Antique shops per 10k people: 2.67
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 2.34

Greenville's Haunted Story: Haunted hotels don't need to be old, dilapidated and abandoned, either. At Greenville's modern Embassy Suites, doors open and close at random, and lights go on and off in empty rooms. It's prompted hotel staff to call the police to investigate unauthorized guests -- only when authorities arrive, there's nobody there. Grass doesn't grow on the golf course in three spots, and even a group of hotel investors backed out after getting the creeps.

#6. Charleston, WV

Population: 51,135
Haunted Index: 62.64

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.17
Antique shops per 10k people: 1.17
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 3.91

Charleston's Haunted Story: Have they had too much to drink, or is this joint really haunted? At the Empty Glass Cafe, the spirit of a former bartender -- killed in a car wreck -- is reported to change the jukebox music when he doesn't like what's playing. He's also been seen appearing and vanishing on a whim.

#5. Pensacola, FL

Population: 52,268
Haunted Index: 63.52

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.15
Antique shops per 10k people: 3.64
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 3.06

Pensacola's Haunted Story: Pensacola certainly has its share of haunted activity -- it even has its own paranormal society! One uncharacteristically haunted spot is the Landmark Skate and Fun Center, where an old man wearing plaid and overalls is frequently seen walking the grounds. Why doesn't he set off motion detectors at night? He's the ghost of Mister Vic, the Landmark's former owner.

#4. Wilkes-Barre, PA

Population: 41,374
Haunted Index: 63.95

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 0.48
Antique shops per 10k people: 0.24
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 5.56

Wilkes-Barre's Haunted Story: The Welles House has been called Wilkes-Barre's own version of the Amityville Horror for all the gruesome death and danger surrounding the seemingly innocent home. Anyone who lived in or went near the house through the years seems to have met an untimely end to their lives; ghost hunters still regularly hear unexplained shrieks, screams and moans that do more than make blood curdle, but literally come through the walls.

#3. Danville, VA

Population: 42,996
Haunted Index: 65.33

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.63
Antique shops per 10k people: 1.16
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 3.95

Danville's Haunted Story: Nobody has lived in the Colonial-era Sutherlin Mansion for years since it was turned into a museum, though you'd never guess it. Visitors report seeing the figure of a man peering out the windows during the day, and inside, the smell of cigar smoke fills the air though nobody is smoking. A girl is often heard moaning from the other side of the wall.

#2. Prescott, AZ

Population: 40,003
Haunted Index: 68.57

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 1.75
Antique shops per 10k people: 5.25
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 2.75

Prescott's Haunted Story: A feline phantasm? The ghosts of a woman and her cat are known to still reside at the Hotel Vendome in Prescott. The way the story is told, the woman was the former owner of the now-historic establishment, but after her husband left her, she died of a broken heart. Too despondent to feed the cat, it starved to death, and joined her in the ghostly afterlife on earth.

#1. Alexandria, LA

Population: 47,938
Haunted Index: 71.96

Cemetery developers and managers per 10k people: 2.29
Antique shops per 10k people: 2.71
Funeral, burial and cremation companies per 10k people: 3.96

Alexandria's Haunted Story: The crew of Ghost Hunters once paid a visit to the Alexandria Zoological Park, where the spirit of Robert "Les" Whitt, the zoo's former director, remains. Whitt, who died of heart problems in 2008, loved his animals so much, that we'd like to think he watches over -- rather than haunts -- his beloved park.

Where would you survive a Zombie Apocalypse? Heres a few place! A bit of Halloween Fun!

Here's Where You'd Survive a

Zombie Apocalypse

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Natalie Morin (guest poster)Eugenio Marongiu / Shutterstock.com
It’s finally here. Sirens wail in the distance, cars careen into shouting pedestrians outside as you frantically fill your bag with whatever is in close reach. It’s not as if you have any sort of game plan—after all, how do you pack for a zombie apocalypse?
Movies, TV shows and books have all taken a stab at defining the undead zombie — how it is brought to life, its likes and dislikes, its habits, and if it likes brains rare or well done — and what uninfected humans need to do to survive. But there are many contradictions between these various depictions. In I Am Legend, zombies are clever and sensitive to light. In The Walking Dead series, zombies are attracted to noise and smell, walk in the daylight and can swim.
Luckily, FindTheHome sifted through all of the noise and identified the best cities to survive the impending doom of humanity. To assess the zombie-readiness of each place, they judged each city by a combination of three factors: resources, defense, and demographics. The higher the overall score, the better equipped the region is to survive.
The cities that scored highly in the resources category were those with lots of hardware stores, sources of water, grocery stores or crop farms.
Your first instinct when faced with the possibility of total human destruction may be to just run, armed with whatever you may have picked up, with no particular destination in mind. But keep in mind that fighting off the undead is half the battle of surviving a zombie apocalypse—the other is making sure you have enough resources to keep yourself alive. Without a source of water, access to food (whether it’s canned or grown), and tools to create or reinforce a shelter, you might as well offer up your brains on a platter. With these metrics in mind, the Midwest, Pacific Northwest are the best places to build your zombie-proof home.
If you want to make sure you can defend yourself, areas with access to guns, ammunition manufacturing and military bases are the best places to go.
Luckily, areas with high concentrations of gun stores and ammunition manufacturing are scattered all throughout the country (especially in Nevada). If you weren’t a fan of the Second Amendment before, all it takes is an army of frenzied zombies to make you a convert.
Finally, towns with low population density and predominantly young, educated populations were deemed fit to adapt best to such an apocalyptic event.
When the zombie apocalypse finally grips the world as we know it, it will be a survival of the fittest. Any weakness could be your downfall. That’s why FindTheHome gave bonus points to places with a high percentage of educated 20- to 44-year-olds. These places include the Mid-Atlantic and West Coast regions. Fitness and the ability to think quickly on your feet comes in handy when battling flesh-eating menaces.
When combining all these factors, you get the best places to further your chance of survival.
So when the day finally comes to pack your bags and your rifle, you’ll know exactly where to go to have the best chance of keeping your life—and your brain.

The Iron Duke by L. Ron Hubbard, A Book Review

*I was sent the book and audio cd set for my review. My opinions are my own as always.

In The Iron Duke Blacky Lee, an American weapons dealer, just happens to be the spitting image of Archduke Philip of Aldoria, a coincidence that enables him to dodge Nazis and ensnare the heart of the attractive Countess Zita, plot elements familiar to readers of Anthony Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda and Rupert of Hentzau .

Pages: 113
CD: 2 disks

Im not a fan of L. Ron Hubbards religious philosophy, nor his reported horrid home/family life. His books are a different story, those I like. If you enjoy pre war books and movies, you will appreciate this book. If you like pirates and such, you will like this book as well. All in all, I think anyone would like this book!

Christmas: A Gift For Every Heart Book Review & Giveaway!

*I was sent a copy of this book for my honest opinion. I was compensated with an Appreciation Certificate for my time. My opinions are my own as always.  This post is sponsored by: Family Christian

In his first ever Christmas book, beloved pastor Dr. Charles Stanley takes us back to our truest and best reason for celebration the birth of the Christ child. By revisiting the people and events of that first Christmas, Dr. Stanley reveals the unique lessons that long ago starry night offers to each of us still today. Such timeless truths as True peace and joy are found only in Christ, not in the things of this world; Christmas itself is undeniable evidence that God always keeps His promises; The Lord God not only lives and reigns, but He is intimately involved in every circumstance of our lives; and The perfect gift for us to give Jesus is the gift of our own heart. Filled with Scriptures, insights, and Dr. Stanley's own personal thoughts and memories, Christmas: A Gift for Every Heart is a treasure you'll want to open again and again.

Pages: 160
Released: 9/2015
Retails for: $14.99

My opinion:

This is such a sweet and beautiful book. Each chapter ends with a beautiful writing of a Christmas Carol. My personal favorite is When You Must Wait. The quote: Christmas  is gloriously undeniable evidence that, no matter how long the delay, God always keeps His promises. Look how long it took him to keep the promise of sending The Messiah. He did. In his time. A promise fufilled! Amazing!

The cover attracts you with a beautiful Silver and White theme with Red Christmas Ornaments outline with silver raised glitter. It is a beautiful cover!

Each chapter has a different color theme and decorated to reflect that theme.

There are 8 Chapters:
1. When The Time Comes
2. Because Perfect Isn't Possible
3. When Everything is Chaotic
4. When You Must Wait
5. When You Feel Defeated
6. When You Long to Be Understood
7. Living Out Your "Thank You"
8. Unwrapping the Gift

Perfect for: A Table Book, Gift to a Close Friend, Family Gift
Ages: 13 & up (Some concepts in book may not be understood to those younger.)

   #STRONGANDKIND and #FLYBY

Hardcover; 240 pages
Publisher: Harper Collins Christian Publishing (October 27, 2015)

In her new book STRONG and KIND: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed, Korie Robertson - New York Times bestselling author, wife of Duck Commander® CEO Willie Robertson, star of A&E's Duck Dynasty, and mother of five - argues that developing good character in our children is the single most important thing we can do to help ensure they lead happy, healthy adult lives.  Robertson explores key traits and what they truly look like in action, asks readers to select the two traits that they hope to see most in their children, and shares hands-on ways for nurturing strength of character.  Written with her mother Chrys Howard and featuring stories and wisdom from husband Willie, STRONG and KIND cuts through the contemporary cacophony of parenting manuals to rediscover, unfold, and embrace the enduring wisdom that has guided the best parents for centuries.

Korie Robertson, wife of Duck Commander® CEO Willie Robertson and star of A&E's beloved series Duck Dynasty, is a mother of five a New York Times bestselling author of several books, including The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks built a Dynasty, written with Willie; Faith Commander: Living Five Values from the Parables with Jesus, written with her mother Chrys Howard; and The Women of Duck Commander: Surprising Insights from the Women Behind the Beards about What Makes this Family Work, written with all of the Robertson wives.  She is also an in-demand public speaker, Duck Commander® executive, entrepreneur and found of boutique Duck and Dressing, and philanthropist, who remains active with a variety of organizations that focus on children, adoption, and foster care.  Korie lives with her family in West Monroe, Louisiana.

I have 2 favorite parts of this book. Chapter 17: BE CONSISTANT. I have such a problem with this part of parenting. I tend to cave,  too much. My husband gets beyond irritated with it. The tips are wonderful. Be prepared for the long road is some of the best advise ever!

The other part is an APPENDIX. Howard Family Legacy of Principles For Living. #53 is Dont be afraid to admit your wrong. Alot of parents have a problem with that. Admitting it to your kids,  shows them you are human and make mistakes. You are not perfect.

I definitely recommend this book to parents, everywhere!

One winner per IP and Email. If you won this on another blog, you may not win on this one.

When did Halloween costumes become so slutty for little girls??

I love my girls. Thankfully my oldest likes to wear hunting/zombie killing stuff. Shes going in the Army and when the Zombie Apocalypse hits, shes going to be prepared and happy!
My youngest, shes a girly girl and always has to be cute or pretty ladda ladda. Shes also 10.
Last year, I made her her own Elsa costume. Hand sewn. Took me 3 months to get it perfect. And she was covered.
I went to Wally-World last week and I was amazed at the girl costume. When the heck did they become so slutty?????

Even in the cartoon, Minnie Mouse was covered more than this kid. (See above pic.) Slutty Minnie is more like it. No way would I let my 10 yo, or even my 16 yo wear that!
The cheerleader costume? Maybe if the skirt was longer and there was more to it! The one above says, to me at least, grown man's dream or pedophile peep show. Am I being over dramatic? I dont think so. Im an definately not a prude and I am a "If you have it, a little flaunt it is ok" type. But on my 10 yo pre-teen and teen, HELL NO!
Slutty Wolf or Covered Wolf? Covered please. And not only because she can bend over and NOT show the world her goods either.

Am I asking too much? I dont think so. Costumes are nothing like the costumes of the past.

Halloween History:

*Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III (731–741) later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13 to November 1. By the 9th century the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, where it gradually blended with and supplanted the older Celtic rites. In 1000 A.D., the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It is widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. All Souls Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All Saints Day celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.
